Noteworthy Vitamin D Notes
Several reputable studies over the last few years are showing that a many people who live in northern climates are deficient in Vitamin D, and that a Vitamin D deficiency materially increases chance of certain cancers (breast and colon) and heart disease. Some noteworthy facts:
3000 IU’s will raise your blood serum level Vitamin D level my 30
You want your blood serum level over 80
D3 is what you want
Apparently you would have to take upwards of 30,000 IU’s / day before it causes ill effects
Apparently vitamin D pills are just that – vitamin D – nothing else
For $30 you can get a vitamin blood test from your doctor
- The US government recommends 400 IU’s a day, many health organizations now recommend 600 IU’s a day (between the age of 1 – 70).
- Calcium and Vitamin D3 go hand-in-hand to decrease the cancer risk.
- A vitamin-level blood test is available from your doctor (usually for an added fee depending where you live).
- 3000 International Units (IU’s) will raise your blood serum level Vitamin D level by 30. You want your blood serum level over 80.
- D3 is what you want.
- Apparently you would have to take upwards of 10,000 IU’s / day before it causes ill effects (according to a A National Cancer Institute study).
- Apparently vitamin D pills are just that – vitamin D – there is nothing else in them.
Like all-things-medical, there are contradictory reports: A recent report from the reputable Institute of Medicine warns against high doses of Vitamin D, and recommends 600 IU’s a day.
Lastly, here is a great data visualization and summary of Vitamin D information: http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/vitamin-d/. Noteworthy:
- UVB does not penetrate glass, so you need to be outside in the sun to get the Vitamin D benefits
- 15+ SPF sunscreen diminishes Vitamin D synthesis by 99%.
